Microsoft retired the AI-900 (Azure AI Fundamentals) exam on June 30, 2026 and replaced it with AI-901. The foundational topics from AI-900 — responsible AI principles, machine learning fundamentals, computer vision, natural language processing, and document intelligence — are retained in AI-901. Three major new areas were added: generative AI with Azure OpenAI Service (prompt engineering, RAG), agentic AI (AI agents, tool calling, multi-agent orchestration with Semantic Kernel and AutoGen), and Azure AI Foundry as the unified AI development platform.
Azure AI Foundry is the single most important new topic: it now constitutes 55–60% of the AI-901 exam under the 'Implement AI solutions using Microsoft Azure AI Foundry' skill group. Candidates who already hold the AI-900 certification remain certified; they do not need to pass AI-901 unless they want to demonstrate the new competencies. AI-900 study materials still apply to the foundational skill areas, but must be supplemented with Azure AI Foundry, generative AI, and agentic AI content for AI-901.
